The Spiritual Discipline of Prayer

1. Prayer Is Expected
a) Jesus Expects Us to Pray
b) God's Word Makes It Clear
- Colossians 4:2, "Devote yourselves to prayer."
- 1 Thessalonians 5:17, "Pray continually."

Prayer is expected of us because we need it. We will not be like Jesus without it.

2. Prayer is Learned
a) By Praying
- We need to practise praying
- The Holy Spirit teaches pray people how to pray better. In John 16:13, Jesus said, "But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth."

b) By Meditating on Scripture
- The process works like this: After the input of a passage of Scripture, meditation allows us to take what God has said to us and think deeply on it, digest it, and then speak to God about it in meaningful prayer.

c) By Praying with Others
- When we pray with each other, we learned the principles of prayer from each other.

d) By Reading About Prayer
- Reading about prayer IN ADDITION TO praying can be a valuable way to learn.

3. Prayer is Answered
a) God has indeed answered but may not be in a way that is obvious to us.
b) It is possible that nothing is amiss in our praying, but that we haven't yet sen the answer only because God intends for us to persevere in praying about the matter awhile longer.
c) We must also learn to examine our prayers - Is it God's will? Is it selfish? Are there blatant sins that we failed to deal with?


4. More Application
a) Since prayer is expected, will you pray?
b) Since prayer is learned, will you learn to pray?
c) Since prayer is answered, will you persistently pray?

Let these questions be a challenge to us.
